DMLS 3D Printed watch - Master's degree final project

The project started as a design created for a watchcase design contest organized by "FADO Design" http://fado-design.com/.
Over time, the watch evolved into becoming the subject of my master's thesis.

As one of the finalists of the contest, I was given the chance to actually manufacture
two prototypes printed from two different materials - 316L surgical steel and titanium.
The titanium version was finished into a fully functioning watch with titanium printed watchhands and a miyota movement hidden in the inner casing.

About the design :

The basic concept was to create a watchcase design suitable for DMLS , that also highlights the benefits of using such a technology.
The style of the watch was inspired by aviation and historical pilot watches, and the function was inspired by WWII pilots that used to wear their watches over their sleeves
to make time reading easier and faster at all times - this concept became the starting point for the most distinctive feature of the watch.

The shape of the watchcase is designed in a way that enables hiding the cuff of the wearer's shirt under the see-thru watchface.
Not only does this improve readability, but also enables displaying the watch even while wearing long sleeve shirts - after all, the watch is usually the most important accessory for men.

This feature transforms the watch into a new type of accessory or jewelry, that may create interesting and fresh fashion looks, because of its' interaction with clothing.

Other qualities:
Because the watchcase almost does not touch the wrist, it allows air to flow underneath it.
Most of the watchcase was designed in one piece to minimize assembly.
The watch was presented at "Gdynia Design Days 2016" where it was given an honorary mention in a contest for best industrial design thesis projects.
